Journaling

One often-neglected prewriting technique is journaling. Journaling is not a five-minute exercise like freewriting or brainstorming, but is a long-term writing technique that generates long-term benefits like awareness of one's own writing process and the ability to look back and appreciate how much progress has been made for a particular writing project. Kiara has been journaling throughout her research paper process, and when she looked back on her entries, she was surprised to see how her own attitudes towards her research topic of the stay-at-home-dad has developed and changed over the course of the semester. In addition, Kiara was able to assess areas where she got hung up in the writing process, like topic exploration, and areas where she should have spent more time, like researching. Finally, Kiara could see how her writing skills improved through her journaling. Check out "10 Ways Journaling Makes You a Better Writer" for more information on how it helps.

If you're new to journaling, the three videos in the video slide show can help you get started. One video shows some of the actual physical tools that you can use to journal; another discusses the benefits of writing every day; and the third provides tips for how to get into the habit.

Check out 119 Journal Prompts for Your Journal Jar for some great topic ideas to get you started on your own journal. Kiara prefers keeping a physical, private journal, but two of the other students on this site, Chelsea and Matt, kept a public blog because they liked the idea of writing for an audience other than themselves.

Journaling can have short-term benefits, though, too. The bulk of our writing process actually takes place in our mind before we ever put pen to paper. If you’re like me, however, you may forget that great writing idea you had when stuck in traffic on the way across town. Keeping a notebook with you or recording your thoughts on your smart phone can help you remember those lightning bolts of inspiration later on.
